Ingredients

  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 8 cups cubed sandwich bread
  • 10 large eggs
  • 2½ cups whole milk
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese divided
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread the cubed bread evenly across the bottom.
  • Cook the breakfast sausage in a skillet until completely browned. Drain the excess grease.
  • Scatter the cooked sausage over the bread.
  • Sprinkle 1½ cups cheddar evenly over the sausage.
  • Whisk together the eggs, whole milk, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole and gently press down any dry bread pieces.
  • Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup cheddar over the top.
  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  • Remove the casserole from the refrigerator while the oven preheats to 350°F.
  • Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes, until the center is set and the cheese is melted and golden.
  • Rest for 10 minutes before cutting into squares and serving warm.
