Hearty Cabbage Rolls

A warm and satisfying dish, perfect for family dinners, these stuffed cabbage rolls are filled with a savory blend of ground meat and rice, then simmered in a rich tomato sauce until tender and flavorful.


Ingredients

For the Cabbage:

  • Large head of cabbage — 1

For the Filling:

  • Ground beef — 1 lb
  • Ground pork (optional) — ½ lb
  • Cooked rice — 1 cup
  • Onion, finely diced — 1 small
  • Garlic, minced — 2 cloves
  • Egg — 1
  • Salt — 1 tsp
  • Black pepper — ½ tsp
  • Paprika — 1 tsp

For the Sauce:

  • Tomato sauce — 2 cups
  • Beef broth — 1 cup
  • Olive oil — 2 tbsp

Instructions

1. Prepare the Cabbage

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  2. Remove the core from the cabbage and blanch the whole head in boiling water for 2–3 minutes.
  3. Carefully peel off the leaves and set them aside to cool.

2. Make the Filling

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork (if using), cooked rice, onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  2. Mix until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.

3. Assemble the Rolls

  1. Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each cabbage leaf.
  2. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll tightly, tucking in the ends.

4. Prepare the Sauce

  1. In a large skillet or pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the tomato sauce and beef broth.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer.

5. Cook the Rolls

  1. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the simmering sauce.
  2. Cover the pot and let simmer on low heat for 45–60 minutes, until the rolls are cooked through and tender.

6. Serve
Serve warm, spooning extra sauce over the top for a hearty, comforting meal.
