He Once Collected Food Stamps. Years Later, He Returned to the Same Building to Sign a Multibillion-Dollar Deal.
One of the most memorable details in WhatsApp’s success story happened outside an old social-services building.
Years before the Facebook agreement, Jan Koum had gone there to collect food stamps.
In 2014, he returned under very different circumstances.
According to Forbes, Koum signed paperwork for the WhatsApp agreement against the door of the building where he had once received assistance.
Before the billion-dollar headlines
Koum came to the United States from Ukraine with his mother. His early life in America included financial hardship and reliance on public assistance.
He later cofounded WhatsApp with Brian Acton.
Their company grew around a straightforward service: helping people communicate through their phones.
By February 2014, Facebook reported that WhatsApp had more than 450 million monthly users. About 70 percent were active on a given day, and the service was adding more than a million registered users daily.
Behind the enormous valuation was a product that hundreds of millions of people were already using.
What the $19 billion represented
On February 19, 2014, Facebook announced an agreement comprising approximately $4 billion in cash and $12 billion in shares.
It also included an additional $3 billion in restricted stock awards for WhatsApp’s founders and employees, vesting over four years.
That distinction matters: the headline figure was not a personal cash payment to Koum.
The place that connected two chapters
The financial announcement explained the scale of WhatsApp’s success.
The signing location revealed something about the distance Koum had traveled.
The building had once been a place where he sought help. Years later, it became the backdrop to a major milestone in his business career.
That connection gives the story its lasting power: success measured against a beginning he had not left out of the picture.
